RICHMOND, Virginia Tony Stewart survived a one-day rain delay and a record 14 caution flags for a second straight win at the Richmond 400 at Richmond international raceway on Sunday.

Stewart made the decisive move in his Pontiac when he shot past the ford of eventual second place finisher Ryan Newman with 27 laps remaining of the 400-lap NASCAR Winston Cup race.

The Fords of Roush teammates Jeff Burton and Mark Martin and the Dodge of Jeremy Mayfield completed the top-five in the 300-mile (480km) race around the tight three-quarter mile track.

Stewart qualified third but started 41st after having to change his engine.

He was 27th when the race was red flagged on Saturday night after 66 laps.

He moved into the lead pack with about 150 laps to go and passed Newman on lap 373 after a side-by-side duel.

Winston Cup points leader Sterling Marlin finished 11th after getting caught in one of numerous multi-car accidents that kept the race under caution for 103 laps, eliminating several contenders.

Drivers blamed a new track sealer for many of the incidents, Reuters reported.

Matt Kenseth moved into second in points, pushing Lurth Busch, his Roush racing teammate to third.

Mark Martin, also a Roush driver, moved to fourth ahead of Rusty Wallace.
